Mind Over Matter

Heart over mind? Or mind over heart? It’s like the question “To be or not to be.”

If thoughts are unselfish, Heaven will make its way, despite all opposing thoughts. The Holy Spirit will give wisdom for discernment and common sense.

Objectivity will have to consider rules and a lot of reasons, and subjectivity will consider favorites.

Regarding who and what is right or wrong, requires a balance of judgment. Once, Norie ( a Japanese student and professional) asked me regarding a set of rules that binds a buyer and a seller. I thought about what my professor in Negotiable Instruments Law Sir Pasimeo (Polytechnic University of the Philippines, 1980's) taught us, “Caveat emptor” (Buyer, beware!) or “Caveat venditor” (Seller, beware!). There are many conditions of a sale. And of course, the laws must prevail.

But what must be in a friendship? “Both are my friends, what advise would I give to them?” That is why she was caught between two poles.

II.

Let me cite examples/part of rules:

1. Laws in business stem from business is business.

2. Laws in court carry with it a justice system.

3. Professionals have the professional code of ethics.

4. The administration and government have laws that serves the people.

5. Schools have standards.

6. The Catholic church has a list of canons.

7. There are human rights law that applies to all people (the rich and poor alike, no tags).

8. Banks have laws in lending acts that aren’t onerous.

9. Communities/private entities impose a set of rules for order.

10. Each person carry a principle in life, each nation a constitution.

II.

On the net, everyone can read all sorts of information and advertisement – even about choosing leaders and good politicians/candidates. In the Philippines, soon April 2010 will be electing new public officials to run the government. In line with this, people are hoping for leaders who will serve and render the people good governance.

A good politician is not being poor or being rich, before or now. It is how one lives with the poor, a life experienced with the poor ( poor in any way, or literally short of material wealth) and how he supports and uplifts poor lives. Watch out PR officers and supporters! You should speak honestly about candidates and know his/or real score to serve the public, with no vested interests.

These questions may help. What kind of person is he for others – yesterday, today, and tomorrow? Did he accumulate a huge amount of wealth while in service? Is he/she selfish? Could he be so objective or subjective? What could be his first impulse on helping others? Would he be like the widow who gave her last penny? Would he take a blame or put it on others, or let others suffer in misery? If he/she would be a politician would he consent his community of overwhelming power? Or would he impose respect and dignity for all men, even though his enemy? These are idealistic views, but some of us can be good leaders in the process of genuine service and God’s guidance. That is, if the leader is a servant. He must not be a Pharisee, or a Judas Iscariot and sell his soul and his friends.

We all have our preferences, but how far can we go on serving others and living the Ten Commandments and universal laws of GOD honestly?

When are we using the mind?

When are we using the heart?

Even rules have exceptions and even the Ten Commandments have conditions.

They say it should be mind over matter. They say it should be human rights, and more consideration.

How could we do prudent actions? It is not simple. But with the light of the Holy Spirit, we can answer some of these questions. Can we look up to the Sacred Heart and pray, therefore? Truly, we have to be responsible for every stone we cast. For the choices we make, may we do it with God every single day.
